On 25 May, 2012, ASF had the pleasure of holding a brainstorming event at the Bangkok Club, in Sathorn. Many pre-eminent members of Thailand’s academic and business community attended. The event was organized by our Chairperson, Dr. Juree Vichit-Vadakan, and Executive Director, Dr. Montri Vichit-Vadakan. Our board member, Dr. Somaski Xuto, acted as moderator. We thank the Ford Foundation for their generosity in funding the event.
The theme of the discussion was Thailand’s integration into the ASEAN Community in 2015, and ASF’s role within this transition. Amongst the issues raised included the need to improve English language skills among Thai students and professionals, as well as the need to find a way to address intercultural gaps and learn more about our ASEAN neighbors. Another key point identified was the need to direct attention towards ameliorating development gaps between ASEAN nations (i.e. the lesser developed CLMV countries compared with Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, etc), as well as within Thailand itself. In the near future, ASF hopes to facilitate more productive dialogue in the lead-up to Thailand’s exciting future transition.
